Customer Rating: Summary: A Superb Daily Driver Comment: In this review I'll provide a summary and then I'll list the pros and cons of the eee PC 1000HD.
First of all I'd like to say that this is a delightful little daily use laptop. I got it earlier today. For the price, it's fast and stable. Its build quality is surprisingly good and the casing is stylish and aesthetically appealing. The battery life exceeds expectations for a sub-$500 laptop.
Just to get this out of the way up front, the keyboard is rubbish. It's utter trash. Although the letter keys are larger than those of earlier models, the layout, the missed keystrokes and the awful key bounce makes typing on this netbook a chore.
Pros:
* The screen is very bright and high contrast with not a trace of flicker.
* The stereo speakers are decent, sufficient for casual listening.
* The large, wide multitouch trackpad allows access to all areas of the screen without having to lift and reposition your fingers.
* The battery life is superb at this price point (between 3 hours 45 minutes and 5 hours - be careful though and read the box carefully, some versions of this model have a 3 cell battery, some have 4 and some have 5 - don't depend on product literature because some stores will advertise a 6 cell battery but it actually says 4 on the box).
* No built in crappy webcam (a webcam is an accessory, don't buy a laptop because it has one; it's probably going to be crap and it'll just take up extra system resources).
* The product is small and light but has a decently sized screen.
* Boot time is surprisingly short (which is good since you'll be rebooting Windows at least twice a month after Windows Update, whether you like it or not).
* The product is very easy to setup, just snap in the battery, plug in the power chord and press the power button.
* Build quality is superb. All components fit together well with no visible gaps or deformities.
* There's plenty of storage onboard for all your files and documents so no need to carry an extra hard drive or thumb drive with you.
* Applications load and react to input quickly.
Cons:
* This is more about eee PC's in general: The model numbers are very confusing. Do I want the 1000A? Or perhaps the 1000H? Maybe the 1000HD? There doesn't seem to be any comprehensive list that compares the features and helps you to select the model you want/need, and most stores only carry two or three models out of the line.
* The non-standard keyboard layout has me hunting and pecking a lot even though I usually type upward of 50 WPM.
* There's noticeable key bounce so I have to use backspace a lot due to repeated characters.
* The right side shift key is the same size as the arrow keys and it's situated to the northeast of the arrow keys, so often I find myself hitting the up arrow key when I wanted to hit the shift key.
* There's a dedicated "Prt Sc / SysRq" key but you have to use the Fn key to get Home and End key functionality. WTF? Seriously who uses "Prt Sc / SysRq" more than Home and End?
* There are only four dedicated hardware buttons even though the strip they're on could easily accommodate eight more. The rest of the functions without dedicated keys (brightness, volume, etc) require you to use Fn + a number key.
* If you're a palm leaner you'll find the "Intel Inside" and "Designed for Microsoft Windows XP" badges haphazardly slapped onto the lower-left of the deck scrape against your palm frequently.
* The status LEDs on the right side of the deck are excessively bright to the point that it's like having four little flashlights shined into your eyes.
* The AC power adapter connector is flush with the bottom of the deck so placing the product on any soft surface such as a couch or your lap places undue stress on the connector, which I am sure will result in a loose/broken connector sometime in the future.
* The product runs too hot to be left comfortably against skin, so don't plan on having this device on your lap while you're watching TV unless you're used to playing the "balance the hot Intel processor based laptop" game.
* The print on the keys is somewhat dim. Brighter lettering would help offset the garbage keyboard layout.
* The left and right mouse buttons require too much pressure to actuate.
* The display is much wider than it is tall, so while you can fit a whole web page on the screen horizontally, there's not much content room left vertically after the browser's toolbars and status bar, so it's a bit like browsing the web by looking at it through a slot.
* The wireless adapter defaults to disabled in the BIOS settings after the BIOS is upgraded, so most users will assume after upgrading the BIOS that the wireless adapter just doesn't work anymore. To turn it back on you have to hit F2 at power on and enable it in the BIOS menu.
* Lots of extra Microsoft garbage installed (Windows Live Messenger, MSN Toolbar, etc etc).
Customer Rating: Summary: Great mini laptop/netbook for the money! Comment: I compared several netbooks before choosing this one. The Asus 1000HD which has the intel celeron, runs much hotter than this 1000H with the atom processor, based on my use of both for a week. This one has the webcam and bluetooth as well, where the 1000HD does not. I would suggest getting a wireless mouse b/c the mousepad is rather stiff. If you are just websurfing and using iTunes, you do not need more RAM. The keyboard size is fine for me, but might be a little too small for someone with big hands. Once you get used to the blue coded function keys, (home, pg up/down etc.) it's a breeze. The location of the right shift key is odd. For some reason Amazon had this listed at 6 pounds, but it's only 3.2. Mine came with a black carrying case, which I was not expecting. Amazon is the only site I found with the 1000H in colors. Bestbuy only had black. I like the white and the green for not showing fingerprints and dust. The 10" screen is plenty for most webpages. I love this for the size and weight, and highly recommend it.
Customer Rating: Summary: the notebook computer sucked Comment: The notebook arrived with a malware virus on it. The company told me that the virus could only have been on the computer from an email that was downloaded which meant that the computer had been used or reconditioned. The computer also ran so hot that the warranty label on the back was rubbed off from the heat. Also, parts of web pages did not download.
Customer Rating: Summary: ASUS 1000H Green Comment: I purchased this little netbook for my daughter for Christmas. I wanted something that would be portable, have a decent battery life, and would be capable of anything she would want to do with it.
I have spent several hours playing around with this product, and I am very pleased. The only snag was no DVD drive, but I fixed this with a DVD/CD drive from Ebay that cost me $39.00.
I am having problems waiting for Christmas because I can't wait to see how excited she will be....and I'll get more playtime too.
I would recommend this to anyone. The size is perfect. The screen looks very nice.
I spent hours researching before buying this model. For the money, I don't think you can beat it. What are you waiting for?...you know you want one.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fantastic little ultra portable Comment: This little laptop is so nice. I got it for my girlfriend for a little portable she could take with her without the need for an extra bag or case. It is fast enough to surf the web, chat with video, and it is really nice for running Rosetta Stone.
