Customer Rating: Summary: Great voice, Tunes not not what I expected Comment: Her voice is as great as ever but the tunes seemed rather flat. Was hoping for a Christmas Classic in the making but missed the mark.
Enjoyed a couple tracks but won't recommend it to others.
Customer Rating: Summary: depressing Christmas songs Comment: I love Mary Chapin Carpenter, but this CD has some very depressing songs on it, especially for Christmas. I expected catchy and lively tunes from her. Her tenor voice adds to the somber effect.
Customer Rating: Summary: Magnificent! Comment: Mary's lirics are always unique... but this CD's lyrics are exceptional! Her music never fails to impress me and it stays with me. She is truly gifted!!
Customer Rating: Summary: A "Wundebar" Winter Season CD Comment: I first listened to the sample songs on Amazon before I ordered this and I was not disappointed in my selection.
This is one of the best Christmas purchases I made and I think that Mary Chapin-Carpenter's album is absolutely wonderful.
Her voice is both soulful and soothing. I especially like Hot Buttered Rum and Come Darkness Come Light..... it mostly contains original songs and not your usual Christmas fare.
I will have this in my collection for a long time and don't see it as just a Christmas album but one that can be enjoyed all winter long. My rating ...5 stars.
Customer Rating: Summary: Got caffeine? Comment: This anticpated CD for the holidays turned out to be a real sleeper--literally. Ms. Carpenter has a great voice and sings with talented musicians. But, the tone and cadence of the "Holiday" songs are a downer. Every one of them is slow, lethargic, mono-toned, and just plain lifeless. I don't know what funk she's in, but I surely hope that she snaps out of it. You won't with this CD. Drink plenty of coffee!

Finally, a Christmas album worth listening to all year long. When Mary Chapin Carpenter set out to create Come Darkness, Come Light, she took a far different approach to recording a holiday album than most artists do. Rather than simply lending her voice to time-worn Christmas standards, Mary Chapin wrote her own set of heartfelt songs which explore the many meanings and emotions that Christmas evokes in each of us. These songs, mixed with a few hand-picked gems from other writers and rarely heard traditional tunes, will speak directly to the hearts of all Mary Chapin Carpenter fans. These are not merely holiday songs, they are simply great Mary Chapin Carpenter songs, both warm and intimate. And while they artfully capture the spirit of the season, this is a rare Christmas album that doesn't feel like it needs to be kept on the shelf between New Year's and Thanksgiving. With stellar support from longtime musical partners Jon Carroll (piano) and co-producer John Jennings (guitars), Mary Chapin's voice goes down as warmly as hot cider on a cold winter's night.
