Customer Rating: Summary: Pull Up Bar Comment: I was excited to see this product on tv, but I had some doubts! So I bought it and I put it to the test. By the time it was assembled and installed on the door's frame it was too low to the ground to be effective as a pull up bar even though I am only 5'10"! it also did not feel secure on the frame of the door, and it did not feel safe to use. The bottom line I am not happy with this product and I do not recommend it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fabbed Extended Long Bar for Iron Gym - Works great! Comment: This works like a charm.
I wanted to use this where I workout at also, and it was not wide enough for the doorways.
Tried finding the 'enclosed offer' for the extended long bar but it did not exist. Could not find on Internet either, so I modified it as follows:
Extended Long Bar modification.
Allows Iron Gym to be used in wider doorways!
Parts at Home Depot:
(2)Galvanized 1/2"x12" rigid conduit pipe = $3.31 x2
(2)Galvanized 1/2" Pipe Coupler = $1.33 x2
I have uploaded pics of this in the 'user uploaded images' for the iron gym.
That being said, the Iron Gym works great for me. I use this at home and at the fitness center. I like using at the fitness center because the doorways are wider and taller.
The Iron Gym easily attaches to the clips on my backpack and is light.
I also use 5lbs ankle weights (10lbs total) for added training (but not recommended if you are a beginner)
It is ok for sit-ups but seems to slip up on the door frame. I have to really concentrate on holding it with my feet. Therefore, I do not use it much for this purpose.
I do use it for the push-ups as I can get 'deeper' push ups.
Useless for dips. Commercial cracks me up showing the dips. Dips need to be full range of motion in near upright position which this cannot do.
For doing different pull-ups this is great. I have found that this is identical to the 'Creative Fitness Door Gym' in which they make little extension bars for wider doorways, but have read that the extensions are useless as they barely screw in to the ends of the bars. Actually got the idea for the mod from someone else, but improved on it somewhat.
Customer Rating: Summary: Eactly as advertised. Comment: Iron Gym Total Upper Body Workout Bar
This product is perfect. Totally as advertised, well made and we are very happy with it.
The Gym was deliverd on time and we have no problems with it nor do we expect any.
Customer Rating: Summary: No real complaints Comment: I purchased this product about a month ago. I didn't have any problems with stripping the screws like some have said. I've found it to be sturdy enough to support my 220lb frame for all three exercises. It was pretty easy to put together. My only complaint is that it has left some marks above the door frame (little black marks that almost look like cracks in the wall, but they aren't). These marks don't rub off so I'm not sure if they're permanent or not. You may want to use on a wall that is dark in color or put something up between the wall and the top support bar.
Customer Rating: Summary: Sturdy and works well Comment: Actually found this for sale in a local Rite Aid for under $30 and bought it on impulse having seen the TV adverts. Cheaper than paying postage, although it doesn't include the ab straps. There is a form in the box to get them "free", the catch being a $7.99 shipping fee. For straps. Still undecided on that one..
The manual is basic but has some nice (albeit brief) tips on diet and workout schedules.
The product itself is reassuringly sturdy, with the sole exception of the plastic ring that goes between the 2 horizontal pole sections. That cracked during assembly. Its function is just to prevent vibration / rattling and I still managed to use it but that was annoying.
When everything is tightly bolted together (try not to over-tighten), it's pretty much rock solid. I weigh 165 lbs and there's a barely perceptible flex when using the inner-grip positions. One of my brother-in-laws hung on it holding the inner-grips and there was a more noticeable flex but he weighs over 200 lbs.
I like the narrow grip perpendicular bars and the narrow grip chin-up positions. The "wide" grip position usually results in my forearms touching the door frame, which feels wrong but I'm new to pull-ups and may just be my form.
Regardless, if you're a fan of wide-grip pull-ups then this might not be the bar for you, unless you have a wider door frame (mine's less than 30" measured inside, the wooden frame itself is 1.5" wide).
One caveat with having a wider door frame is that the Iron Gym is designed for door frames under 34" (measured inside, under 33" to be safer); for frames 34-38" wide you need the extension kit, which is $9.99 + $6.99 S&H if you order direct.
Looking at the product's other functions, it is great for push-ups but weak for dips. The two push-up positions give variety and excellent depth. Sadly, depth is lacking for dips. I tried raising my feet up using a low wooden coffee table (17" high) but my form felt weird and after a few reps my right shoulder was unhappy. I'll stick to dipping at floor level for now!
Haven't tried using it for sit-ups yet as the one door frame narrow enough for pull-ups isn't suitable for sit ups (the bathroom is too small). My other door frames are too wide for either pull-up or sit-up use. For reference, those frames are a little under 36" (measuring the interior distance).
The little metal clip that goes on top of the door frame is not essential but recommended. It's not hard to fit, it's not THAT noticeable, and it can be easily removed at a later date without leaving any damage. I took the Iron Gym to another apartment to show my brother-in-law (minus clip) and nearly shat myself when he literally jumped at it (forward and up) to start his motion. It rattled scarily but luckily held firm, so the basic design without the clip is sound but not fool proof!
Based on my needs the standard Iron Gym is fine and easily worth the $30 paid in-store. If I needed the extension kit and was paying the inflated S&H charges I'd be knocking another half-star off.
