Customer Rating: Summary: Interesting Comment: This is a good introduction to the use of a Linux product. For a long time Windows user, there is a lot to be learned, but the EEPC Users Wiki is full of instruction. Straight out of the box it accesses a wireless network, connects with Skype, and does everything else I expected. Adding new programs and removing pre-installed programs is a challenge, but I expect that with a new-to-me operating system.
Memory is of two types: the 4 gb for programs is faster than the 16 gb for data. Unfortunately with the hidden restore partition, and the update that occurs with first connection, almost all of the 4gb is filled, leaving precious little room for new programs. The flip side of that is that restore to factory state is easy when my inexpert Linux manipulation fails. Battery lasts a full 5 hours of use.
Customer Rating: Summary: This device is awesome but make sure you know what you are buying Comment: This device its awesome, the best part is the SSD, I wouldn't buy it if it where HD, so make sure you know:
1)SSD are not HD and you shouldn't use them as if they were, avoid write unnecessary stuff on SSD like swap
2)The manufacture O.S. Works for nothing, I installed UbuntuUMPC 8.10 and works wonderful, make sure you know Linux before buy this one, in other case buy the WindowsXP Version
Customer Rating: Summary: I love this thing. Comment: This is just perfectly designed for its purpose, extreme portability, email, web surfing. I admit I can't use touch typing on it, but the keyboard is not bad for one so small. To me that's the only negative though and is easily offset by the light weight and compact size of the Eee PC as well as the amazing battery life.
After trying a live version of Eee Ubuntu, I decided for now at least to stick with the Xandros installation. But I did use information from several user sites to change it so that I can boot into an advanced desktop mode or use the simple mode that comes with it.
Unlike my laptop, which I have rarely taken with me unless I really had to have it, this goes everywhere. I can just drop it in my briefcase - it's like throwing in a book.
I was also amazed that it came with actual printed hardware and software manuals. Not to mention a sleeve to protect it and a cleaning cloth.
All in all a really nice piece of technology, practical, useful, sturdy and not overly cumbersome.
Customer Rating: Summary: Recommended Comment: I love the solid state hard drive & the linux operating system. Being that it is only 1 gig, its not quite as fast as my 2 gig larger computer, of course that is expected.
The only negative I can think of at this moment is that ASUS usually doesn't keep up with the latest version of Firefox. For example, when I first got it, it still had FF2 on it. It took a couple of weeks until they updated it to FF3 (ASUS is control of the updates). At the moment I am writing this FF 3.0.5 has been out for a couple of weeks now but ASUS has not updated it & is still using FF 3.0.4. Not using the latest version of a browser can be a security risk - for any browser!
Other than this one negative, I absolutely love this computer!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Asus 901 Comment: I did not find the original Linix OS acceptable. It seemed a little kidish to me. So i wiped it and installed Ubuntu. Once that was up and running i could not have been more excited about my new netbook. The keyboad takes some getting use to. The right shift key is not very well placed. The two finger scrolling on the mouse pad is a huge win! I would not give up my netbook for anything.
