Summary: overrated to the extreme
Comment: Tool has too many problems preventing them from ever reaching greatness.

The most noticeable problem is their lack of talent to actually write a decent vocal melody. Instead, the lead singer sounds like someone who just blurts out whatever kind of vocals he thinks is appropriate, no matter how absurd is sounds, which mostly means he ends up either sounding obnoxious for wasting my time, or comes across sounding JUST as generic as thousands of other singers who are attempting the same thing as far as commercial alternative rock music goes. Choose either one. The sound of his voice alone is enough to send me screaming in total fear.

Then you have the guitar riffs, that are not only uninspiring and uncreative, but supposedly millions of people hear something interesting about them (which is completely mind-boggling to me). Wanna hear interesting guitar riffs? Check out Black Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Led Zeppelin. The kind of guitar riffs on this Tool album are about as generic as they come. Very average. The guitar solos aren't any good either.

The lyrics are sometimes tolerable, but this band is certainly no Bob Dylan as far as lyrics go, but I guess they *are* the highlight of the album. Not that THAT is saying very much, mind you. Lyrics about spiritual journeys, escaping reality, or however you want to interpret them. Sometimes they're alright, but most of the time the lack of any kind of interesting vocal melody makes taking the time to pay attention to the lyrics on Lateralus a complete chore.

This is just forgettable rock music. Whether people think Tool are an intelligent band, or saving the rock scene, or however you want to think of them. The bottom line to me is that they are below average, and to me personally, incredibly uninteresting.

Comment: Tool! Arguably the most fiercely lauded band of the last twenty years! My God, the TALENT!

The singer sings!
The guitarist plays the guitar!
The drummer plays the drums!
The bass player plays the bass guitar!

Wow! If that's the kind of thing you like you'll love this CD!

Summary: Over 1200 5 star reviews? Really?
Comment: I don't get it... over 1200 5 Star reviews? I just don't get it! Would you say their review's were not that of the album itself or, more that of dedicated fan ferver? The only thing that really impressed me on this album was the packaging. Maybe that's what the over 1200 5 Stars were for . . . No?!

Summary: Great music, brilliant musicians
Comment: Tool's third album may be their best; certainly it is great. Very happy with it and it stands up to repeated listening.
